Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw, three-time British Open champion Nick Faldo, and former Miami Hurricane great and Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly were among the iconic sports figures who gathered September 30 for the 28th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner—an event that raises much-needed funds for spinal cord injury research at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. | more

Nursing School Receives Grant Aimed at Reducing Unhealthy Behaviors

The U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has awarded a three-year grant totaling nearly $1 million to investigators at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies to educate a new generation of health care providers in the identification and intervention of unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, substance abuse, and risky sexual behavior. | more

UM to Test Emergency Notification Network on October 11

The Office of Emergency Management will conduct a full-scale system test of the Emergency Notification Network on Friday, October 11. The test will include SMS text messages, voice messages, emails, website banners, social media, campus cable TV, digital signage, and outdoor warning sirens. A partial test of just the new mass public address system will occur on Monday, October 7. | more

National Cyberspace Security Awareness Month is an opportunity to engage and inform the community about cybersecurity. Give to the United Way and Get Tickets to a Miami Heat Preseason Game
The Heat is still on. University of Miami faculty and staff who made their 2013 United Way contribution, but were unable to pick up Miami Heat preseason tickets during the ticket distribution events on October 3 and 4, will have a second opportunity to secure complimentary tickets to see the NBA champion squad. Miami Heat representatives will be on the Coral Gables, Rosenstiel, and Miller School campuses this week to distribute tickets for the October 19 preseason game vs. the San Antonio Spurs. | more

The Center for the Humanities began its fifth anniversary year on October 3 with the Stanford Distinguished Professor Lecture by Dava Sobel. The science writer, known for her ability to give a voice to historical characters, presented a view into the life of Copernicus and his interaction with Georg Joachim Rheticus, the mathematician who convinced him to publish On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres, which presented a full heliocentric theory, a solar system in which the Earth orbited the sun. | more

Playwright Mary Zimmerman’s ‘Metamorphoses’ Opens at the Arsht Center October 10
The Jerry Herman Ring Theatre’s 75th season continues with Metamorphoses. Mary Zimmerman’s adaptation of Ovid’s drama takes the poet’s tales to a stunning visual life, juxtaposing the ancient and the contemporary in both language and image.
