Study: Ultra-Fast Robots Can Take Over Financial Markets

The global financial market recently experienced a series of computer glitches that abruptly brought operations to a halt. The cause of these “flash freezes,” according to a new study by a University of Miami researcher and others, is the sudden emergence of mobs of ultrafast robots that trade on the global markets and operate at speeds beyond human capability, thus overwhelming the system. | more

Lisa Ling Opens Her Heart and Mind to Students
Acclaimed journalist Lisa Ling, executive producer and host of “Our America” on OWN: the Oprah Winfrey Network, answers questions from University of Miami student reporters during a media availability session prior to her Fall Convocation address September 9 in the BankUnited Center Fieldhouse. In her talk, titled “Open Heart, Open Mind,” Ling shared some of the compelling story assignments that had a profound effect on her, from covering the civil war in Afghanistan to reporting on China’s “one-child policy” and how it resulted in thousands of female babies being abandoned or put up for adoption because of the cultural and social traditions in that country that make boys more desirable than girls. | more

Trying to Walk the Straight and Narrow

Wearing special goggles designed to impair vision, a University of Miami student attempts—unsuccessfully—to perform the walk-and-turn field sobriety test while under the watchful eye of Miami Police cpl. Pedro Beltran. The simulation, conducted to educate students about the dangers of impaired driving, was one of a handful of demonstrations carried out at the University Center Rock on September 11 as part of an annual safety fair hosted by the UM Police Department and the Florida Department of Transportation. | more

Sheila Grangeiro, an instructional designer at the Miller School’s Professional Development and Training Office, is used to pushing her body to the limit, competing in triathlons and going zip lining in Nicaragua. Recently she took her adventuresome spirit to new heights, rappelling from the 19th-floor pool deck of the JW Marriott Marquis in downtown Miami as part of Over the Edge, a fundraiser organized by the Miami Children’s Initiative to help youngsters in the underserved Liberty City community. | more
