UM Professor to Study Link Between Cancer and Auto Traffic

Yongtao Guan, a professor of management science, along with collaborators from the Yale School of Public Health, has received a $453,000 grant from the National Cancer Institute to identify potential links between cancer risk and the proximity of homes to heavy automobile traffic. | more
New Clues Illuminate Alzheimer’s Roots

Scientists at the University of Miami and Rice University have figured out how synthetic molecules designed at Rice latch onto the amyloid peptide fibrils thought to be responsible for Alzheimer’s disease. Their discovery could point the way toward therapies to halt or even reverse the effects of the disease. | more
Sylvester Recognized for Outstanding Cancer Care

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has been given a perfect score from the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative Certification Program of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. This program awards a three-year certification for outpatient hematology-oncology practices that meet their highest standards for quality cancer care. | more

Warren Sapp Enshrined in Pro Football Hall of Fame

Former University of Miami standout defensive lineman Warren Sapp, who recorded 569 tackles, 96.5 quarterback sacks, eight forced fumbles, and four interceptions during a stellar 13-year career in the NFL, became the sixth Hurricane to join the Pro Football Hall of Fame when he was enshrined on August 3 in Canton, Ohio. | more

Get Half Off DCC Registration by Joining Team UM Sylvester

The University of Miami will pay half of the $150 registration fee for faculty and staff who sign up to ride in the fourth annual Dolphins Cycling Challenge as part of Team UM Sylvester. The 2013 Dolphins Cycling Challenge, a two-day tri-county cycling event that benefits the lifesaving research and treatment programs at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, is scheduled for November 2 and 3, with routes ranging from 13 to 170 miles. | more

UM, Children’s Health Fund, and Verizon Foundation Transform Pediatric Mobile Care
The Miller School of Medicine, Children’s Health Fund, and Verizon Foundation have partnered on a new telemedicine-equipped mobile pediatric clinic—a doctor’s office on wheels that is bringing the expertise of the entire UHealth system to disadvantaged children across Miami-Dade County. The films of master French director Alain Resnais are now being featured at UM’s Bill Cosford Cinema. Playing through August 11, “Déjà Vu: Return to Resnais” is a thought-provoking retrospective celebrating the 65-plus-year career of Resnais, a leader of the New Wave of unorthodox, influential film directors appearing in France in the late 1950s. The film series coincides with the exclusive Miami premiere of Resnais’ latest film, You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet (August 9-11). | more
