Glassell Family Foundation Gives UM
$5 Million to Name Research Facility
The University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science has received a $5 million gift to name the new Alfred C. Researchers Identify Gene that Causes Deafness and Myopia
An international team of researchers from the Miller School of Medicine and elsewhere has identified a new genetic syndrome characterized by deafness, the most common human sensory disorder, and myopia (nearsightedness), the most common human eye disorder. The study, published online in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, could lead to a better understanding of the mechanism involved in the two disorders and how to treat them more effectively. | more |

A Lesson from the Nation’s Chief Health Care Officer
Having a former secretary of health and human services as the instructor in their course on the U.S. Health Care Crisis has provided a group of University of Miami students a unique perspective on the subject. But on April 1 UM President Donna E. Shalala relinquished the reins to her class for a day, allowing current HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to teach her students. Sitting next to Shalala on stage inside the Storer Auditorium, Sebelius discussed how the Affordable Care Act will benefit Americans, from outlawing the practice of denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions to requiring all new health care plans to offer preventive services such as mammograms and vaccinations with no out-of-pocket costs. | more |
