Miami Wins ACC Tournament Title, Secures No. 2 Seed in NCAA Tournament East Region

Led by sophomore guard Shane Larkin's 28 points and senior Trey McKinney Jones's six three-pointers, the Miami Hurricanes defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels 87-77 on Sunday to win its first ever ACC Tournament title. With the victory, Miami has locked up the No. 2 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament and will play Pacific this Friday in Austin, Texas. | more

Hope for HIV Vaccine Found in Researcher’s SIV Study

Eckhard Podack, professor and chair of microbiology and immunology, has demonstrated that a new vaccine developed in his lab provides significant protection against the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus, a non-human virus closely related to the HIV virus that causes AIDS. Developed with a novel heat-shock technology, the compound offers hope for a new type of HIV vaccine. | more

2012 United Way Campaign Surpasses $1 Million

Increased participation rates by several schools, colleges, and divisions combined with strong fundraising efforts from students helped push the University of Miami’s annual United Way campaign past the $1 million mark for the seventh year in a row. The campaign raised $1,100,631, making it one of the most successful university-based United Way fundraising drives in the nation. | more

James Nickel is renowned for his work in human rights law and theory, having written a classic book and numerous articles on the subject. Now, in one of academia’s ultimate displays of admiration, Duke University’s Kenan Institute for Ethics will stage a conference this week in honor of the University of Miami professor of philosophy and law who has been described as “a clear voice on human rights.” | more

Urban Farmer Will Allen to Present ‘Growing the Good Food Revolution’

University of Miami alumnus Will Allen is a retired professional basketball player turned urban farmer whose Milwaukee-based Growing Power organization promotes sustainable food production and the growth of communities through the creation of local gardens. Allen will speak at the BankUnited Center Fieldhouse on Thursday, March 28 at 6 p.m. His lecture, “Growing the Good Food Revolution,” is part of the Office of Civic and Community Engagement’s Urban and Environmental Sustainability Initiative. | more

A Solution for a Worthwhile Cause

A group of 48 UM employees deviated from their usual work routine on February 22 to sort through boxes of books, clothes, toys, and other items for abused and neglected children living at a special home that cares and provides services for such youngsters. The effort was all part of Solutions Service Day, a community service project developed by UM’s Business and Finance Division aimed at teaching its employees valuable lessons about team building while benefiting a worthwhile cause at the same time. | more
