Ushering in a New Era: UM Opens Life Science & Technology Park
South Florida’s future as a biotech hub got considerably brighter on September 20, when the University of Miami officially dedicated its ambitious Life Science & Technology Park, a new endeavor UM President Donna E. Festival Miami Gets Under Way This Week
The sound of music will soon fill the air, as the Frost School of Music’s renowned Festival Miami gets under way on Saturday, October 1. The festival will feature more than 20 concerts organized into four themes: Great Performances, Creative American Music, Jazz and Beyond, and Music of the Americas. Other highlights include two Pulitzer Prize-winning composers, three piano concerts, and a closing-night performance at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. | more

UM to Test Emergency Notification Network
In observance of National Preparedness Month, the University of Miami will conduct a full-scale test activation of its Emergency Notification Network sometime during the week of September 26. As part of the test, ENN messages will be sent to every member of the University community who has registered his or her personal contact information on myUM. | more
Smoke Free Initiative Well Under Way
The University of Miami’s three-year initiative to make its Coral Gables campus smoke free is now well under way. UM faculty, staff, and students should be aware that smoking is permitted only in designated areas on campus. | more
UM to Participate in Study to Identify Genes Supporting Life in Extreme Conditions
In search of the genes that support life in extreme environments, researchers at the University of Miami are participants in a collaborative grant awarded by the National Science Foundation to sequence the genome of the Atlantic killifish Fundulus heteroclitus, a species known to have evolved extremely high tolerance to dangerous pollutants and different thermal environments. | more
Take Part in the Inaugural South Florida 5K Run/Walk for Vision
Hope For Vision, a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding the development of treatments and cures for blinding retinal diseases, will host the inaugural South Florida 5K Run/Walk for Vision on Sunday, October 16 in Hollywood Beach, Florida. Onsite registration begins at 6 a.m., and the race begins at 7:30 a.m. Sign up today. | more

UM Joining FDOT to Launch 'Put It Down' Campaign
The University of Miami is partnering with the Florida Department of Transportation District Six to launch “Put It Down,” a new safety campaign that will educate motorists in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties about the dangers of distracted driving. As part of the initiative, UM will hold an outreach event on Wednesday, September 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Rock on the Coral Gables campus. | more

    Celebrating Diversity in the Workplace
    The Greater Miami Society for Human Resource Management honored the University of Miami with its sixth annual Diversity and Inclusion Award on September 20. The award recognizes organizations and individuals whose diversity and inclusion practices transcend the norm. UM was honored for best practices and innovative initiatives for promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Above: Nerissa E.     Nilo Cruz: Playwright in Residence
    Nilo Cruz, the first Latino to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the University of Miami’s Henry King Stanford Distinguished Professor in the Humanities, addressed a capacity audience at UM’s Storer Auditorium on September 15, speaking on the topic “Theatre Accompanied by Light: Searching for Poetry in the Theatre.” His lecture was presented by the College of Arts and Sciences Center for the Humanities. Cruz, who splits his time between Miami and New York, is currently in residence with both the Center for the Humanities and the Department of Theatre Arts. | more
